The temporomandibular joint, or TMJ, is the joint that connects your lower jaw to the rest of your head. If this joint becomes stressed, injured or misaligned it can cause significant discomfort and may impact your day-to-day life by affecting your ability to speak, eat, yawn and perform other daily actions.
Common signs of TMJ disorders include:
- Grinding, clicking or popping sounds when opening and closing your mouth
- An inability to open your mouth wide to speak, yawn or chew
- A locked or stuck jaw
- Pain when chewing and biting
- Pain in your neck, shoulders or ears
- Frequent headaches
In some cases, TMJ disorders can be treated with orthodontic care. Dr. Brian Chamberlain will evaluate your mouth and jaw to determine if orthodontic treatment is the right solution for your needs, and if so, will work with you to create a treatment plan that will improve your oral health and function. Your treatment plan could include more traditional orthodontic treatments, such as braces or clear aligners, as well as the use of orthodontic headgear or other appliances to properly align your jaws. Dr. Chamberlain will discuss all your options with you so that you can make a fully informed decision about your care.
If needed, our orthodontist may make recommendations and coordinate treatment plans with other dental specialists regarding other types of treatment, such as jaw and facial relaxation exercises, mouth or night guards, lifestyle changes, restorative dental treatments or jaw surgery.
