Thumb, finger, lip or pacifier sucking is normal and natural in infants and young children. However, these habits, when prolonged beyond the age of 5, can adversely affect the health of your child’s teeth and jaw.

What To Do

Stop the habit by the time the permanent teeth start erupting to prevent adverse effects (age 5).

See the orthodontist if you notice the following any time after 5 years old:

-Buck teeth: front teeth that stick out, making it hard to close the mouth or lips. This can create troublesome and embarrassing speech. Buck teeth are also more vulnerable to potential trauma.

-Open bite: a type of malocclusion where the upper and lower teeth don’t touch when the jaw is closed. An open bite can contribute to serious health issues such as swallowing, speech and/or airway problems.

-Crossbite: also known as an underbite. This can cause uneven jaw growth and an asymmetric face in the adult if not remedied as a child.

Call Today!

If you have concerns, seeing the orthodontist is the best way to put your mind at ease. At SuperSmile Orthodontics located in Las Vegas, Nevada, our skilled orthodontist, Dr. Brian Chamberlain can help correct harmful oral habits, guide your child’s jaw growth, help lower the risk of trauma to protruding front teeth and eventually guide permanent teeth into correct positions, even at such a young age. We invite you to call 702-645-5100 to schedule a consultation with Dr. Chamberlain. It’s worth a visit to help your child’s smile develop properly!

You’re probably thinking, I am too old for braces, but you’re not, you’re never too old! There are many reasons why adults may want or need orthodontic treatment and these days, traditional braces aren’t the only solution. Let’s discuss why orthodontic treatment may be right for you, and the different options that are available to you.

Why Orthodontic Treatment May Be Right for You

  • May help fix bite problems that cause grinding, prevent chipping of teeth and unnecessary wear on your teeth, as well as improve talking and chewing comfortably.
  • Can make it easier to clean your teeth and keep plaque from building up in those hard to get to spaces, which helps prevent cavities and gum disease.
  • Can boost your confidence by enhancing your bright, beautiful smile.
  • May help correct and prevent jawbone and joint problems including headaches, TMJ pain and the breakdown of bone.
  • May help with some sleep issues, including sleep apnea.
  • Treatment can close gaps caused by missing teeth or prepare your mouth for bridges or implants.
  • Fillings and crowns? No problem, those teeth will move just like natural teeth.

Treatment Options

Whether you’ve never had braces, or you need a tune-up from years of not wearing your retainers, we’ve got you covered. There are a couple of options when it comes to orthodontic treatment:

Clear aligners are an effective, less intrusive way to straighten that smile. Much like a custom-fitted mouth guard or retainer, you can take the aligners off for anything such as a family picture or to make sure they are clean. It makes flossing and brushing a breeze and causes less discomfort than traditional braces. Working directly with an orthodontist instead of a direct-to-consumer, mail-in type of aligner, will give you the customized one-on-one treatment that is needed for the best results. Unlike the mail-in aligners, your treatment will be actively monitored by our orthodontist and he can work in conjunction with your local dentist and other specialists to ensure they keep up to speed on your dental and health history and other dental needs. Nothing can beat the care of in-person treatment.

Book Your Consultation

At SuperSmile Orthodontics in Las Vegas, NV, we use self-ligating brackets. Self-litigating brackets are similar to traditional ones except that they have a built-in system to secure the archwire to the brackets instead of metal ties or colorful elastic bands. Generally speaking, your visits will be shorter, the braces can be easier to clean and they may cause less discomfort than traditional braces. Although they are not required, we can put colored elastics on your brackets if you would like to make a statement or show your personality!

So don’t wait! Contact us to schedule a consultation today.

You want to love your smile! Improper care of your teeth while wearing braces can lead to stains, tooth decay or white spots on your teeth. By following these simple dental hygiene practices while wearing braces you can ensure you will love your smile when the braces come off!

Carry a travel toothbrush and toothpaste with you. The American Dental Association recommends toothpaste with fluoride and without whitening.

Brush for two minutes after every meal, or at least rinse if you can’t brush, and especially make sure your teeth are clean before bed. Use of an electric toothbrush is highly recommended. Using an interdental brush on occasion to mix it up is a good idea as well, since they can get around the brackets to loosen food that might otherwise go untouched.

Brush at a 45-degree angle, pointed toward your gum line.

Floss every day, preferably before you brush. Use floss threaders, a Waterpik or orthodontic flossers.

Rinse with mouthwash at least once a day. Find an antiseptic mouthwash to rinse with after brushing thoroughly. This can help fight plaque build-up, gingivitis and bad breath.

See your general dentist every 4-6 months for a check-up and cleaning. Be sure to keep regular cleanings with your general dentist during orthodontic treatment to prevent cavities and other oral maladies from going unchecked.

At Super Orthodontics in Las Vegas, Nevada, we want you to love your smile, so take a few minutes every day to implement these hygiene tips and we know you will! If you have any questions, or would like to schedule a visit with Dr. Brian Chamberlain, please call 702-645-5100 today.

See the Orthodontist by Age 7
Don’t Wait Til 8

1. Baby Teeth that fall out too early or too late

Baby teeth that fall out prematurely or too late can cause permanent teeth to come in unevenly. Orthodontists are trained to recognize and address the problems that arise in these situations.

2. Pain while Biting or Chewing

Pain while teething is normal, but pain while biting or chewing is not. This pain can indicate there are jaw or bite problems that should be addressed. Orthodontic treatment can usually correct these issues.

3. Mouth Breathing

Does your child habitually breathe through their mouth? Do they have that little line across their nose or snore at night? We are designed to breathe through our noses. Mouth breathing could be a sign that there is an underlying health issue that should be addressed. Believe it or not, mouth breathing can lead to orthodontic issues. In many instances a child will require expansion of their palate, along with braces, due to the underdevelopment of the maxilla, or upper jaw, as a result of mouth breathing. Orthodontists are trained to recognize and address the problems that arise with mouth breathing.

4. Shifting or Clicking of the Jaw

Normal and healthy movement of your jaw should not cause any pain or noise. An uneven bite can cause the lower jaw to shift which can cause pain and, ultimately, orthodontic issues.  Sometimes orthodontic treatment is required to correct this condition.

5. Frequent Biting of the Cheek(s)

A misaligned bite (malocclusion), overcrowding and crooked teeth are some of the issues that can interfere with normal chewing and cause someone to bite their cheek. Completing orthodontic treatment can often correct this situation.

6. Facial Imbalance

The lower part of your face is partially defined by the underlying teeth and jaws. When teeth are crooked and/or the jaw is imbalanced, this can result in facial asymmetry. Orthodontists are experts in evaluating the relationship between the teeth, jaws, and the face. When balance is restored, the face looks healthier and more full, boosting confidence.

7. Don’t wait until 8!

Waiting until your child has all their permanent teeth may do more harm than good. Dr. Chamberlain and the American Association of Orthodontists recommend that children have an orthodontic evaluation by age 7.  Join our kids program, K-9 Club, by visiting our office for a free consultation. Click link for appointment request.
